How to find your niche

Day 1: There are so many choices for everything! Too many choices. First thing in the morning, is it too early to get up and get moving, or can I fall back asleep for another couple of hours? Then, assuming your body didn’t cooperate on falling back asleep, it decided for you to wake up and get moving. Next decision…how do you want your coffee? Caffeinated or decaffeinated. Sugar, sugar mix, sweet ‘n low? Cream, non-dairy creamer, or soy? Do I go to the gym or roll out my yoga mat and work out at home? But, wait, that article I read last week said to start your day by drinking some water…okay, as I sip…

The nagging thought of how do I get to my end goal and start working for myself works its way in. Thankfully, I usually start each day very, very early. I’ve had the privilege to wake up for approximately 23,360 mornings. And yes, I still get excited about what each day holds. Waking up early allows me to wake up at my own pace. And because we are all more alike than different, I too get caught up by too much randomness throughout the day. I often think that I need just a day to be random and to have no real purpose in mind but that’s not likely to happen anytime soon.

So by the time my colleagues are waking up, I’ve had a few hours to prioritize the day and schedule my time. I used to do this in the evening but by the end of the day, my brain is fried!

So, on this new morning, the coffee is brewing and I sit down at my computer. What jobs do I have that I need to work on today? I check my notebook. I might even build a few timelines to tie up any loose ends that I haven’t given a moment to think about. I visit a few freelancer sites, or I might need to prepare for an interview, or come on, learn how to navigate a Zoom meeting. But what I really need to do is continue studying for a certification. And then, I fall down a hole…

Hours may go by and I’m still clicking on random links when I started a YouTube video on “How to build your website?”, “How to Start your Blog?”, or “How to join a Zoom call?”

This is where my bullet journal comes in handy. I try to capture most of my random thoughts and actions in one dedicated notebook. As I’m thinking about where I need to focus, I pull out the daily random thoughts list and zero in on which ones are most closely linked to my end goal. For instance, I’m just beginning this thing called blog posts and as an end goal, I am going to try to walk you through how I plan to find my niche.
